Abstract: Genital herpes simplex virus infection is a recurrent, lifelong uncurable disease with no cure. It can produces symptomatic disease and asymptomatic viral excretion. It is currently the main cause of genital ulceration and an important public health problem. Since clinical diagnosis is neither sensitive nor specific, virological and type-specific serological tests should be used routinely. Oral antiviral drugs for HSV infections are safe and effective and can be used to treat episodes and prevent recurrences.
