Abstract: Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein(FABP4/AFABP/aP2)is a member of the fatty acid-binding protein family that bind with high affinity to saturated and unsaturated long-chain fatty acids, eicosanoids and other lipids. Its functions include shuttling free fatty acids, regulating cellular lipid metabolism and expression of inflammatory cytokine. Recent studies have indicated that FABP4 have a central role in the development of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular and diabetes mellitus. It is also known to contribute to preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus. Understanding the mechanisms and functions of FABP4 may provide novel therapeutic strategies to treat and prevent relative diseases.
