Abstract: Human reproduction provides favorable opportunities for the transmission of infectious agents. Furthermore,at either stage of reproduction, from conception to parturition and the neonatal period, mother and her offspring exhibit distinct susceptibilities to infection. The impact of pathogens on reproduction can be extenuated or exacerbated depending on stage of acquisition during pregnancy. Similarly, factors such as maternal immune response, nutritional status,or concurrent infection may modify the effect of a specific infectious agent. In this review,we discuss associations between infectious agents and reproductive problems at each stage of female reproduction and its potential mechanisms.
